Getting HTML source of emails

Posted on: 03 September 2008

For my sins, I am currently using Windows Vista as the OS on my main PC, and am using the build-in mail client, Windows Mail, basically a rebranded Outlook Express. It's pretty basic, but I don't need much from my email client. However, today I found a need to view the HTML source of HTML emails.

To cut a long story short, my business partner is putting together fancy HTML newsletters using a fancy HTML editor, then sending me the email. I then have to put the HTML source into a hand-cranked PHP mailer I've cobbled together. The snag is that there's no obvious way of getting at the HTML once I've got the email into Windows Mail. I can open the raw .eml file direct from Windows, but that's all MIME-encoded.

Fortunately, I came across this treasure of a tip on the Vista forums. Basically, open up the email message in a new window, then press Ctrl-F2 to open a new Notepad window showing the HTML source. Brilliant! Now why couldn't that be on a menu somewhere?
